New Activities That Can Educate Your Child
Often parents are looking for new experiences to educate thier child. Here is a little list I've come up with that can help your child understand the world around them.
1) Nursing home. Often the elderly are looking to meet and talk to new people, and children of all ages bring joy to elderly people. It also teaches respect for elderly. Talking to people in these places helps foster relationships that bring experience as elderly people have a lot to share about the world and the experiences they have lived. Call a local nursing home and find a elderly person for your child to adopt.
2) County Court and City Council. This is the place where business of the county and city take place, they are often open forums and open to the public. Here you child will see the issues that are taking place, budgets are discussed, and projects to improve the community are presented.
3) County Political Party Meetings - again here your child will see how people discuss issues at a grass roots level, and disucss laws that need to be proposed and issues that effect our local community.
4) Public Libraries - This is a treasure of resources. Often there are public readings for children, and clubs and activities for older children. Also this is a great place for children to volunteer, learning how to correctly maintain the order of the library, learning the dewy decimal system, and helping to take care of community resources.
5) Civic Clubs and Social Organizations - 4H, Lions Club, Rotary Club, and Toast Masters are all great organizations that can help provide resources to your older children. These clubs often have volunteer oportunities and rescources that allow your child to learn about the community around them.
6) Volunteer Opportunities - Chruches, Non-profet organizations, cities and counties are always looking for people to volunteer to help with projects. Usually it's just asking. These opportunities not only help to build character, self esteem, and a sense of pride, but also are great items to present when applying to colleges.
Remember that learning opportunities are all around, but most of the time they only take asking a simple question, how can I help.
Please feel free to share other opportunities in the comments!
