Spring Garden Science Classroom

Image
Gardening is an excellent way to educate children about where food comes from and to teach them about the science of plants. In recent years, home-schooling has become increasingly popular, and incorporating gardening into science classes is a fantastic way to engage children in hands-on learning. One of the most important reasons for teaching children about gardening is to help them understand where their food comes from. In today's world, many children are disconnected from the sources of their food, and they may not realize that vegetables don't just magically appear in the grocery store. By growing their own vegetables, children can gain a better appreciation for the work that goes into producing food and the importance of sustainable agriculture. Another reason to teach children about gardening is to help them understand how plants grow. This can be a fascinating process to watch, especially for children who have never seen a seedling sprout from the ground. By observing...

Protecting Your Children from the Internet: Balancing Freedom and Safety

Image
As parents, we want to protect our children from the dangers of the internet while still allowing them to benefit from the wealth of information and resources it offers. With the internet comes great responsibility, and it's up to us to provide a safe and secure online environment for our children. In this article, we'll explore some solutions for protecting our children from inappropriate content and online dangers. Filtering content is one way to protect our children from inappropriate content such as pornography and violent sites. It's important to understand that even seemingly harmless sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Wikipedia can have pornographic content. By filtering content, we can block access to these sites and others that children can innocently wander into. There are many filtering solutions available, ranging from free options to paid services. Some internet service providers offer filtering as part of their package, while others require the use of third-par...

STEAM Education: Fostering Creativity and Critical Thinking in Young Children

Image
As homeschooling parents, we have the unique opportunity to shape our children's education and help them develop a lifelong love of learning. One important area of education that we should focus on is STEAM - Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics. STEAM education can help our children develop critical thinking skills, creativity, and a deep understanding of the world around them. In this article, we'll explore why STEAM education is important and how we can start incorporating it into our young children's learning. Many parents may wonder how they can start teaching STEAM to their young children, especially during the early years of teaching. One of the simplest and most effective ways to introduce STEAM concepts is through play. Toys such as blocks and Legos, drawing with crayons and paints, and making things with paper and glue can all form concepts of creativity that can bloom into a mindful of information about STEAM. For example, building structures wi...

The Mellifluous Magic of Music

Have you ever listened to a song and felt like dancing, singing along, or just feeling really good? That's the power of music! Music is an amazing art form that can make us feel happy, sad, excited, or calm. In this article, we'll explore the fascinating world of music and how it affects our brains. Music is all around us - in movies, on the radio, and even in nature! You might have heard birds singing, or the sound of leaves rustling in the wind. These natural sounds are like music to our ears. But what makes music different from other sounds? Music is made up of different elements, like melody, rhythm, and harmony. The melody is the main tune of the song that you can sing along to. The rhythm is the beat that makes you want to dance or tap your feet. And Harmony is the combination of different sounds that make the music sound richer and fuller. When we listen to music, our brains light up with activity. Studies have shown that music can affect our mood, heart rate, and even o...

New Activities That Can Educate Your Child

Often parents are looking for new experiences to educate thier child.   Here is a little list I've come up with that can help your child understand the world around them. 1) Nursing home.  Often the elderly are looking to meet and talk to new people, and children of all ages bring joy to elderly people.   It also teaches respect for elderly.  Talking to people in these places helps foster relationships that bring experience as elderly people have a lot to share about the world and the experiences they have lived.   Call a local nursing home and find a elderly person for your child to adopt. 2) County Court and City Council.   This is the place where business of the county and city take place, they are often open forums and open to the public.  Here you child will see the issues that are taking place, budgets are discussed, and projects to improve the community are presented. 3) County Political Party Meetings - again here your child will see how ...

Exploring Trivium: The Three Roads to a Complete Education

Image
Did you know that in ancient Greece, the Trivium was considered the beginning of a formal education? The Trivium is where the three roads meet and it forms the foundation of the Liberal Arts, which is what a free man or woman should know. In this article, we'll explore the Trivium and how it can help us achieve a complete education. The Trivium consists of three important concepts that everyone needs to know: Grammar, Logic, and Rhetoric. Let's take a closer look at each of these. Grammar - This is the first road in the Trivium. It's about taking in information through our senses - what we see, hear, taste, smell, and touch. This information is used to stimulate our memory and build ways of storing helpful information that we can use for a lifetime. Each child's brain learns differently and the approach to memory building could be different for each one. Once we find the method that works best for us, we use it to learn the "Laws" of Language, Mathematics, Mus...

Living History and Hack Schooling, the new Homeschool

Image
History has been one of my favorite subjects.   To know where we've come from, is to appreciate what we have today.   The video above has given me an Idea for a home school experience, and maybe even a movement.   Teaching History as a subject doesn't mean we get into that subject, but why not teach history in a way that helps our children experience the history first hand and truly understand and remember the ideas, characters, virtues, values, technology, and principles that history can teach.    From the video above, I saw the passion that this boy has towards his "Hack Schooling" or truly self educating for living.   In Texas I would like to start an organization centered around Living History and Self Education, not limited by age.   I'm sure there are groups out there that do this type of thing, but I could see an organization where living and breathing history could teach our kids and citizens why we live in such...

Kinder Web Games This is a simple drill, with big bright numbers and optional sound, very simple Fruit Shot Subtraction - My youngest son played this game and did pretty well,  A target is shown with a problem and the fruit with the correct answer needs to be shot. Fairy Frog a game that focuses on number patterns Farm Addition Solve Chick math problems by dragging and dropping the correct answer Cannon Math  Shoo...

Real Math in the Garden

Making math stick takes some effort, and making it make sense means using it in the real world.   In this example we will be using math to build a raised garden bed.  Our garden beds will be eight inches deep with a length of six feet and a width of four feet.  The student must determine how many boards need to be purchased, and the cubic yardage of dirt using the following recipe  1/3 part vermiculite, 1/3 part chicken manure, 1/3 part compost.    Variations on this problem could include using cinder blocks for the edge, which would be 12" long, or using bricks.     To solve the problem you will be using perimeter and area, which means knowing when to add and when to multiply.  For more advanced students have them use the internet and search the local Lowe's or Home Depot for the parts they would need and make a budget and shopping list.
