Living History and Hack Schooling, the new Homeschool
History has been one of my favorite subjects. To know where we've come from, is to appreciate what we have today. The video above has given me an Idea for a home school experience, and maybe even a movement. Teaching History as a subject doesn't mean we get into that subject, but why not teach history in a way that helps our children experience the history first hand and truly understand and remember the ideas, characters, virtues, values, technology, and principles that history can teach. From the video above, I saw the passion that this boy has towards his "Hack Schooling" or truly self educating for living. In Texas I would like to start an organization centered around Living History and Self Education, not limited by age. I'm sure there are groups out there that do this type of thing, but I could see an organization where living and breathing history could teach our kids and citizens why we live in such a great time, and also why our history is a rich resource for all knowledge, and living.
Here is how I envision this to work:
1) Organizational Meeting is held to introduce the Living History Contest. The contestants each will have two weeks to choose several characters from a specified period of history (i.e. The Civil War) that they would like to represent. Each person will rank the characters they want on the application, a choice of 5 or more character ensures each person will find someone that they want to study.
2) At the Two week meeting all participants must turn in an application at a general meeting, and when a conflict with characters, a drawing for those characters is held, and the alternate characters assigned, until all contestants have a unique character.
3)Weekly meetings at this point where coaches will guide teams through research, learning, and central learning opportunities occur. During this time coaches will assist with costume development, acting, and assist with the research.
4)A semi finial review will be held at a date no earlier than four months after the assignment of the characters, at this point all characters will be reviewed, and the contestant will have to play the role in costume. A systematic grading system will be used to determine the top ranking of each group, and then they will move on to the finials
5) Finial review - each character will have to give a 15 minute monologue, and then take questions and answers from the audience in character.
